Securing your Data Part 1

There’s no disputing it, you cannot trade as a business without IT. Businesses today must be able protect their data, retrieve it if it’s lost, and guard against the ‘downtime’ that may be experienced while it’s not accessible.

This article is an introduction to several different topics including Data Backups, Data Security and Business Continuity.

Data backups are simply copies of your data and/or systems that you can restore lost or damaged files from if required. There are several types of backups and many types of backup strategies. Each type and strategy should be tailored specifically to your business needs.

Data Security involves protecting data from being stolen, deleted, or accessed by non-authorised personnel. This includes the setup and management of VPN’s, devices, firewalls to name but a few. With the adoption of BYOD (bring your own device) into the workplace, the ‘Cloud’, and users wanting constant access to files, securing data is becoming increasingly difficult.

Business Continuity is the ‘contingency plan’ in place while data is retrieved and or systems are restored. It allows your business to continue to trade despite day to day infrastructure being damaged or inaccessible. Examples are redundant (or Warm) servers, secondary ADSL access for servers, Backup email solutions etc.
